This book very effectively explains how ancient cultures shaped modern western culture and church doctrine. It also nicely puts, seemingly unusual verses of the bible, into the cultural context in which they were written which caused quite a few epiphanies for me. If you ever wanted a concise explanation of how The Church formed it's doctrine on homosexuality, birth control, women in leadership, divorce, premarital sex, etc... Read this book. If you are curious about the sexual attitudes and practices of ancient Israel and her neighbors, and the early church- read this book. Or, even if you just want to understand what human and divine love is and how they fit into christianity, and know why Song of Solomon is in your bible... please obtain a copy. Even though it was written in the 1950's, and even if you do not agree with some of it's points of view, it is still relevant and a good read.
